In the heart of "the Valley of the Racehorse" lies the pristine grounds of Upshire Farm, home of the Baker McVeigh, Lambourn equine practice. 

Our Lambourn practice offers ambulatory services, which include a fully-equipped mobile practice with digital radiography, ultrasound and endoscopic technologies. Our world-class training facility boasts some 14 miles of turf and artificial gallops.

John McVeigh

Leading the Baker McVeigh group is the renowned John McVeigh, a prominent figure in international horse racing circles. For three and a half decades, John has played a significant role in the expansion and development of our Baker McVeigh practices, overseeing the business’s growth across six practices, over three continents.

John is based in Summerveld and continues to travel to our other practices, offering his assistance, expertise and knowledge.

Ian Beamish

Ian qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2006 and moved to Newmarket, where he undertook a two-year internship at Greenwood Ellis (Newmarket Equine Hospital). On completing his internship, Ian worked in New Zealand before joining our Baker McVeigh team in Summerveld. After two years in South Africa, Ian returned to the UK. A spell in our Chantilly practice ensued before returning to Newmarket where he looked after one of our larger yards. He then joined our Baker McVeigh practice in Lambourn, in 2016, and now looks after several racing yards.

Antony Clements

Antony Clements joined the Baker McVeigh group in 2001, having previously worked in practices in Hampshire and the University of Glasgow. He has extensive experience and post-graduate qualifications in equine orthopaedics. After moving to Durban and helping to establish the Cape Town practice, Antony moved to the UK where he became the managing partner of the Newmarket practice. He now tends to the needs of our larger clients and offers consulting services across the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

Duncan Moir

Following a number of years with Baker McVeigh in South Africa, Duncan returned to the UK to help establish our Newmarket practice. Since then, he has developed an extensive client base in all areas of thoroughbred racing and sports horse fields. With a particular interest in sports medicine, Duncan manages several racing yards in Newmarket. In addition, he vets and consults for various private clients both in the UK and internationally.

Fernando Perez de Villar

Hailing from Spain, Fernando joined our Baker McVeigh practice in Newmarket soon after its inception, in 2006. Following his graduation from Madrid, he worked for three years in Spain before moving to the UK where he has been residing for the last twenty years. Fernando worked in a large animal practice in Surrey, where he dealt mostly with horses. Moreover, he has a wealth of experience in all aspects of equine practice and gained the RCVS Certificate in Equine Practice, in 2006. In 2011, Fernando became a partner and has been instrumental in the success of our Baker McVeigh Newmarket practice.

Brian Abbott

Brian came to the Baker McVeigh group with a wealth of veterinary experience gained in the UK, Ireland, Australia and South Africa. He worked in our Baker McVeigh Summerveld and Cape Town practices and became a senior associate, responsible for the daily ambulatory work at some of the larger racing yards in the country. In 2009, Brian returned to the UK and joined our Baker McVeigh group, forming Baker McVeigh & Abbott in Yorkshire, in 2014. He has a postgraduate certificate in Equine Practice and excels in all aspects of his profession.

Christopher Welsh

Christopher graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh. He started his career working for a large mixed practice in Norfolk, followed by a stint working in a racing practice within the UK.

In January 2016, Christopher joined us at Baker McVeigh Summerveld, in South Africa. He then moved to our Newmarket practice before joining our Baker McVeigh Lambourn team, in 2018. He has a particular interest in orthopaedics and upper airway surgery and is currently completing a post-graduate certificate in orthopaedics and lameness.

John Hodsdon

John graduated from Onderstepoort in 2003. As a new graduate, he went to the UK where he practiced in Suffolk and Essex at two different equine practices. In 2011, he returned to Natal Midlands, one of the main thoroughbred breeding regions in South Africa. Here he continued working in the thoroughbred breeding industry. He currently migrates between the Northern and Southern hemispheres for the equine breeding seasons.

Georgina Setter

Georgie graduated from Cambridge University in 2012 and joined Baker McVeigh in Summerveld, South Africa, where she spent the next four and a half years. During her time there she developed her interests in equine orthopaedics and surgery. She also spent a season working at our Cape Town branch in 2014. After two and a half years working in our Newmarket branch, Georgie joined our Baker McVeigh team in Lambourn.

James Boardman

James graduated from The University of Cambridge in 2016 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine after intercalating in Biological and Biomedical Sciences. After graduating, he spent three months as a Clinical Research Scholar at a large equine hospital. He then undertook a two-year internship at an equine referral hospital in Newmarket, working primarily with Thoroughbreds.

 

Jack Church

Jack graduated from the University of Surrey in 2022 and after seeing placement with multiple Baker McVeigh practices has joined the Junior Associate Programme in September 2022. He enjoys all aspects of equine clinical work especially lameness and sports horse medicine.

Outside of work he enjoys competing in swimming and triathlon as well as horse riding.
